Technology & transparency

Technology is our infrastructure, not our editorial voice

We are open about the fact that automated technology drives most of our workflow — and equally clear about what our role is, and what it is not.

What our platform actually does

Our role is primarily to summarise, highlight and promote already-published information, while clearly identifying and linking readers to the original source whenever applicable.

The News Collective should therefore primarily be viewed as a digital content promotion and marketing platform, helping existing stories about the UAE and the region — and their original publishers — reach a wider audience.

Where technology assists

  • Monitoring trusted sources and feeds across our subject areas.
  • Organising and grouping related information.
  • Identifying developments relevant to a publication's audience.
  • Summarising already-published material and preparing it for review.
  • Processing structured data such as fixtures, results and listings.
  • Running editorial workflows, review queues and publishing steps.

Where people decide

Publishing decisions, sourcing requirements and sensitive subjects are handled by the people running the platform. We do not employ journalists, reporters or a newsroom conducting independent reporting, and automated assistance does not lower the standards set out in our editorial standards.

What we do not do

  • We do not present unverified machine output as confirmed reporting.
  • We do not fabricate quotes, sources or imagery.
  • We do not remove attribution from reporting we build on.
  • We do not claim ownership of third-party reporting.

A media network first

The News Collective is a digital media and content platform. Technology is how we operate efficiently across many specialist titles; it is not the identity of our publications. More about our role and licence details is on our About page, and the stage-by-stage detail is in our editorial policy specification.
